When Should I Convert my Garage?

There are several factors to consider when deciding whether to do a garage conversion:

  1. Parking: when my street has plenty of street parking or your location is near a transit area

  2. Your needs: A garage conversion can be a great option if you need more living space or an additional room or a rental property or a home office, gym, or guest room.

  3. Budget: Garage conversions can be more cost-effective than building an addition or moving to a larger home. However, the cost will depend on the scope of the project, materials used, your location and the level of customization.

  4. Zoning regulations: Check with your local zoning board to make sure that converting your garage is allowed in your area. There may be specific rules regarding minimum square footage, insulation, and parking requirements. Some city won't allow Garage Conversion with Attached ADU.

  5. Resale value: A garage conversion can add value to your home if done properly, but it's important to consider the potential impact on resale value. Buyers may prefer a garage over a converted space, so make sure to weigh the benefits and drawbacks before making a decision.

  6. Maintenance: Keep in mind that a garage conversion will require ongoing maintenance, just like any other living space. Make sure you're prepared to keep up with any repairs or updates that may be needed.

Overall, if you have a garage that is underutilized or not being used for its intended purpose, a garage conversion may be a good option to consider. However, it's important to carefully consider your needs, budget, zoning regulations, and potential resale value before starting any construction.
